We are very excited to announce that The Georgian Triangle Tourism Association, has sponsored Bfresh.Media's Collingwood and The Blue Mountains travel video that will be filming in January 2018. We are partnering with Association Members like Cranberry Resort to create one amazing travel experience. That means that the search is on for our tourists that want to be featured in this all inclusive getaway film project.

This is a documentary style video which does not require acting. So if you love to travel and love the outdoors, YOU could be a great fit. What we really want is to show off real people, enjoying real experiences. Here are more details and how you can enter.

ARE YOU EXCITED YET?

Who we’re looking for:

  1. A duo (2 friends/couple/siblings) - must be 19 years of age or older.
  2. You must be free to film January 14th - 17th

Collingwood and Area Tourism Video Coming Soon

Last year I inadvertently created a wildly successful tourism video for the province of Newfoundland. My viral vacation video, which currently has over 525,000 views on Facebook, was more successful than most official Newfoundland and Labrador videos. Here is that video again, if you have not seen it:

Since that video went out, I’ve wanted to create something similar for Collingwood and the Blue mountains. I want to show off what an amazing place this is, in the same fun, sharable way. To me, the success of that original video was not a fluke and can be recreated. I even wrote a case study about that which you can check out here: http://bfresh.media/2016/10/25/newfoundland-in-ten-days-a-viral-success/

Now instead of trying to pitch this to a government entity or individual client, I’d rather just go out and create it myself. That’s because I prefer to maintain full creative control to ensure maximum success. Not to mention, the original video gave great exposure to all the other businesses that we featured and that was a huge part of what made it successful - featuring others.

So that’s it, it’s settled. We are making a Winter Tourism Video for Collingwood and The Blue Mountains, set to shoot in January 2018.

We will be filming in early to mid January over a period of 3-4 days. Our on camera “tourists” will be from out of town and chosen through a social media contest in which entries can win an all expenses paid vacation to Collingwood and The Blue Mountains. This is to generate excitement before the video has even begun.

We Need Your Help To Make This Video

What I am looking for is sponsorship because I understand that a price tag of $8-10 thousand may not be realistic for most local businesses or even the tourism offices but that is how much this would cost to make. Instead, what I’m suggesting is that we pool our resources and funds, that’s how this video is going to get made. If we want to feature the best that this area has to offer, we are going to to need support from those who want to be in it, so here is what we are looking for:

    1. A Title sponsor - A title sponsor is just that, your brand right in the title of the video as “Presented by...” Plus we will feature your business and brand with great coverage in the video. This is to help cover some of our expenses - Note that if we receive multiple offers, we will choose to work with the best fit for the project and look for a sponsor that can help connect us to other businesses on our wishlist.

    1. Transportation Sponsor - We will be driving to pick up our tourists within a 200km radius of Collingwood and then taking them all around town to show them the sights. A transportation sponsor would receive a “transportation provided by” credit with logo plus we would be sure to feature plenty of shots of your vehicle branding. This could be any business from auto dealership to Real Estate office that has a wrapped vehicle and want’s to really show it off.

    1. A Hotel/accommodation sponsor - We will be bringing “tourists” from out of town as part of the adventure and they will need a place to stay for 3 or 4 nights. This is one of the most important sponsorship categories and we will be eternally grateful (and it will show in the video!).

    1. Recreational Sponsors - There are so many fun things to do, places to go and experience and you could be one of them. Yes this is a Winter video, but we are looking for all kinds of activities both indoor and outdoor. To be featured as a recreational sponsor we just need 3 free passes. We just need access to film and we will show off your business. We are looking for anything to do, indoor, outdoor, from Skiing, to rock climbing, to a spa, live music and anything inbetween.

    1. Restaurant Sponsors - This area has so many great places to eat. There is no shortage of amazing dining experiences and we want to show them off. All we need from a restaurant or bar is some food and or drinks to be featured. Whatever you are able to provide, we will be looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner and maybe a few stops for just some appetizers, or coffee and snacks. Again, any establishment willing to pitch in will get great coverage plus a tag in the Facebook post.

Just think how awesome this will be. Your business featured in a tourism video and you don't have to pay thousands of dollars for it! We know that a big part of what makes our area worth visiting is the people who make it great and that is what most tourism videos are missing, YOU!

So if you have a local business, anything you would like to contribute to be a part of something amazing, then we would love to hear from you. Send me an email at b@bfresh.media and let's talk.

Graphic Designer Wanted

BFresh.Media is looking for a Graphic Designer for contract work. We are a multimedia production and creative advertising agency that works with a variety of clients from professional services, to retail,  to consumer packaged goods. We are looking for an experienced graphic designer to assist with a variety of ongoing client work.

Hours are flexible on a per project basis, working remotely (but preferably local to the Collingwood/Blue Mountains area). Hours will vary but currently we may require up to 8 hrs per week with the hopes of increasing that in the future. We would like to work with someone fun, energetic and driven, who will grow with us as a company.

The ideal candidate has graphic design experience and subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud. We are looking for someone who might do graphic design part time currently as a sole proprietor, looking to expand, or a recent design graduate. That someone should be creative, (obviously) but also be able to bring new ideas to the table. Our clients want fresh ideas and eye catching design and we aim to exceed expectations.

If you also have experience working within strict brand guidelines, and maintaining brand standards then this is a bonus.

We are offering a rate of $25/hour.

If you are also someone who is detail oriented, able to meet deadlines, and have excellent communication skills then we would love to see your work.

Please send your portfolio (either link or attachment is fine) to b@bfresh.media and we look forward to hearing from you.

Web Video: As Crucial As The Website

A new user just landed on your website homepage. Scratch that, a POTENTIAL CLIENT has just landed on your website homepage. Timing is critical, you have about 5 seconds to capture their attention, once you have their attention you need to hold onto it as long as possible. Best case scenario, “as long as possible” means only about 2 minutes on average. In that amount of time you need to convince them that what they’re looking for, is exactly what you offer.  Not to mention that you’re the best option around.

I’m going to cut right to the point here because you already know the answer is video. Your best chance at explaining what you do in a way that is professional and engaging is with video. Right on your home page. You know this because you’ve used websites with a video on the homepage and websites without and you always gravitate to that video. That’s because it can say far more in less time plus we retain information in a video at a much higher rate than text.

I don't need a website, customers can find me in the phone book.

- said no one since 1999

Riiight... You would probably agree that not having a website for your business is a bad idea. Think of all those missed opportunities when customers search for you online and go with your competition instead. Well we’re at the point now where not having video on your website is just as crucial to your marketing material.

For the user, it’s all about efficiency. They are far more likely to stay on your website longer if there is video because it means they will find the answer they’re looking for much faster than digging through text. Side note: typically you want to keep your video around 2 minutes or less as that is what users will expect.  Search engines know that users are more likely to engage with video and that’s why web pages with video are more likely to land you on page 1 of the search results.

Aside from delivering your message quickly, a video on your web page adds professionalism and personality that can really set you apart from the competition.

Examples With Cost

Simple Backdrop

In this approach, you can introduce the company owner or the whole team. The simple backdrop is just a canvas for many different styles. It is often fully scripted but can incorporate unscripted elements and even outtakes if you really want to make your viewer laugh.

This is a cost effective approach to a website video because the shoot itself can be very efficient, lasting only 1 to 4 hours. Aside from the talking head, other ways we can make this video interesting and engaging is to include things like existing photos or video clips as well as text on screen.

Cost: $800 - $1,400

Factors that increase cost:

  • One or two cameras
  • Size of team or Length of shoot
  • Text or graphics
  • Many editing revisions
  • Video Length

Video Examples:

Your Story

This approach usually involves an on-location shoot, not only to introduce yourself and/or your team but your work setting as well. The simple backdrop approach is professional but this added look at your space shows the viewer what they can expect when they step into your place of business.  That added professionalism can reduce uncertainty by showing that you are the real deal.

Generally this can take 1 to 2 days of shooting to capture all of this footage. Especially if multiple locations or customer testimonials are involved. Again, a scripted or unscripted approach can be taken here.

Cost: $2,000 - $3,500

Factors that increase cost:

  • Multiple locations
  • Size of team or Length of shoot
  • Text or graphics
  • Many editing revisions
  • Overall video length

My first Short Doc Attempt from 2015

2015 was my first time visiting the Collingwood Elvis Festival. As an aspiring documentary filmmaker, I wanted to go out and film the madness and just see what came out of it.

At the time I was shooting on a Nikon DSLR without any stabilization or ND filters which are really good at cutting down the amount of light so really bright things like the sky don’t get completely washed out. I had borrowed a really cheap shoulder rig from a friend and it really didn’t seem to help much. I did have a decent microphone but it is meant to pick up pretty much everything and it certainly did.

The result was a 5min short that I cut together shortly after but never posted or showed to anyone. I wasn’t thrilled with the shaky footage, the blown out exposure, nor the audio challenges that I had faced as well.

In the 2 years since filming this I’ve learned a whole lot more, and spent a lot of money on equipment that could do a much better job today.

However, the most important thing I’ve learned is this: If you can’t tell a good story with cheap equipment, all the money in the world cannot fix your film. And that is something I really believe. Clean beautiful shots are important, don’t get me wrong, but the absolute best quality footage will only take you so far. What will keep viewers engaged is the story that you tell.

I’ve seen a lot of great documentary films and every now and again I see that shot that’s just out of focus, or a little shaky or hard to hear and it solidifies my belief. Knowing that this film maker chose to use a bad shot because it was integral to the story they were trying to tell, is something I find very honest and comforting.

So watching my first attempt at a short doc again as the 2017 Elvis Festival kicks off, I figured what the hell, it was fun to make and the story is not half bad, but I will let you be the judge.

Maybe it was shot on a mobile phone, or perhaps still from the 90’s and you’re just waiting for that fashion trend to come back?  I hate to break it to you but Hypercolor shirts are not making a comeback… and more importantly, those old or unprofessional headshots don’t make you or your business look good. Open Casting Call – No Acting Required

So here’s the deal: I’m working on a new passion project, a pilot for a television series. I don’t want to give away too much other than it is a documentary style show which does not require acting. So real people, real experiences. We are looking for 2 people to host the show and interested more in personality than anything. Oh ya, and it’s sort of important that you like to travel… and beer. Actually it’s really important that you like beer.

As a passion project, I need to be up front and say there is no budget currently BUT it will only require 2 days to shoot, and I promise it will be a blast. For the shoot, you need to be in Collingwood Ontario for pickup as we will be traveling around the Simcoe, Bruce, and Grey county area. Meals,  refreshments, and travel during production, will be provided on both days. The shoot is scheduled to take place August 8th and 13th from 10am to approximately 8pm. Long I know, but I promise it will be almost 12 hrs of nothing but pure fun.

I will also add that the idea of a pilot is to sell to networks in the hopes that the show will get picked up and then there will be a budget to create something much larger and ongoing. So this bus is leaving the station… are you getting on?

Here’s how to audition:

  1. Shoot a video of yourself 1 min long or less. We want to see personality! Tell us why you should get to host your own show. It might also be good to mention how much you like beer… responsibly (We don’t want to see anyone doing a keg stand).
  2. Upload said video to Facebook or Instagram and use the hashtag #beerfreshmedia so that we can find it.
  3. Feel good knowing you could be a part of something awesome. 🙂

A decision will be made by Wednesday August 2nd, 2017 so get your audition up before then, otherwise you will miss the bus. And don’t worry, if we pick you, you will get all the details about what the show is about (nothing weird or overly physical, I promise).

It should go without saying but you must be 19 years or older to audition.

Lip Dub project with NDDLH in Collingwood

I get asked a lot, “what makes a video go viral?” Well the answer is “a lot of things” but often it just takes a creative idea and little hard work to put it together.

Now granted, this particular video didn’t go viral globally but given the size of the school and surrounding community (school of 100 students in a town of 22k) it certainly did better than most other video advertisements shared by local busineses. And don’t be mistaken, this is 100% an advertisement for Notre Dame de la Huronie.

This video advertisement was created to show off the brand new school and help grow enrollment for the fully French school. Yes we could have done a real estate style tour, but where’s the fun in that? The “fun” part is why it was shared over 60 times. Plus the blooper reel at the end made it extra special. See for yourself, the end result that took a lot of creative planning, coordination, and practice.

So how did we do it? Well a huge credit goes to the Art teacher Mme Nalisa (my amazing wife) who planned the entire video with her grade 5/6 students. Together they mapped out where the camera was going plus the where and when all the students and faculty were to be. They even choreographed that dance and taught it to the whole school. How amazing is that?

We chose the lip dub style because it would be easier for me on the back end. This approach is done in one single take from start to finish so the editing process is very simple. I just dropped in the song and did a little bit of colour correction.

As you can see from the blooper reel however, there were several rehearsals before the final shoot. Because of the large colourful banner that gets destroyed and the silly string mess at the end, we had one chance to get it right and I think they did a pretty amazing job.

For businesses thinking that they want to create a viral video this is just a sample of what that takes. It may require you to step outside of your comfort zone for the sake of creativity and do something that viewers would not expect. Yes, it is more expensive than your traditional advertisement as we would take care of all that extra planning and coordination but that’s the price of creating buzz. That’s what it takes to get people talking about you and sharing your video. There is risk involved absolutely, but it is often very calculated and the payoff can be much better than any traditional advertising approach.

So when someone says to me “I want to make a viral video” my response is: “great, but do you have what it takes?”

Why I’m Installing Theater Seats In The Studio

I’ve always been service oriented. To me it is important to make sure clients and customers are comfortable and well looked after. I feel like there are very few jobs and professions where this should not or does not apply. Maybe that’s my nature but I believe that this approach has helped me succeed not only as an employee but even more so as an entrepreneur.

In my agency days, the client was king. We would wine and dine clients like it was their birthday. We would jump through hoops to make them feel special and want to work with us. Now for the record, I’m not a fan of trying to make people like me by throwing money at them. That’s not the point. I actually did forge some great relationships because we just had a lot of fun together.

Now I’m at a point in my life where wining and dining and especially late night partying on a Wednesday is not really my thing. But there are still ways to go above and beyond to make clients feel extra special and welcome.

Here’s where the Theater Seats come in. When I was originally planning my studio, the concept was just a couch and and a TV. Somewhere to comfortably screen client videos that was not on my tablet or computer screen.

Well my Wife went searching and found these theater seats which seemed too perfect. And just like that, the simple and modest client screening area snowballed into a mini theater with authentic seating and a projector screen.

Currently I have most of the platform built. It is also on wheels so that I can move it around by myself and turn it to face whatever wall necessary. I have a few more boards to cut and lay down for the flooring and then I need to permanently bolt the seats to the boards. Like some of my projects in the studio, it is still a work in progress but I wanted to show it off and see what people think. is it too much? A little over the top? you be the judge.

Stay tuned for more progress as I finish it off and install the the projector in the next few weeks.

What is BFresh.Studio?

BFresh.Studio is in full swing but the main question I still get is: “what is it?”. Is it a video studio? Mostly. Is it a Photo studio? sort of. What about a recording studio? ya we do a little bit of that too.

The answer is that the new Collingwood studio is all of the above. It is everything that we offer as BFresh.Media, now all under one roof. I call it a content creation hub because it’s really designed for content marketers. So if you have a YouTube channel or a podcast or you need lots of product photography and video for say your social media channels, then this space is for you.

It is important to note that we still offer regular video production services. So single video advertisements, shot on location, event promos, as well as motion graphics, and design are all still within our service offering. However, we now offer 3 new membership levels for those who need content on an ongoing basis. Basically if you need 1 video per month or 4+ videos per month, we have a membership package for you. Check out our rates and Membership details here: http://bfresh.media/studio/.

The studio is located at 1 First Street, suite 206-B, Collingwood Ontario. We are here from 9-5 Monday to Friday so come check us out!
