YouTube vs Vimeo – Which Should I Use?

Whether you’re a business owner, content creator, or just someone looking to share your videos with the world, you’ve probably found yourself asking: “YouTube vs Vimeo – which should I choose?” And you’re right to! These are two of the most popular video hosting platforms out there these days, so naturally you’d want to post your content on a site with a large audience. However, while both platforms are excellent options, there are some differences between them that may make one a better fit for you. The first thing to consider when deciding between YouTube vs Vimeo is the size of their audiences. It probably won’t surprise you to learn that YouTube is, by far, the largest video hosting platform on the Internet. In fact, it’s estimated that YouTube has over 2 billion active users a month! So, if you’re simply looking to get your videos in front of as many people as possible, then going with YouTube is practically a no-brainer.

By contrast, Vimeo has a smaller, but still respectable, number of users. While exact numbers are difficult to come by, Vimeo appears to have around 175 million active members worldwide. This makes it a great choice for those looking for a more intimate viewing experience. For example, if you’re making niche videos that you don’t really want to share with such a wide audience, you may be better off going with Vimeo.

Advanced Privacy Options

While both options have privacy settings that let you control who can see your videos, Vimeo takes things a step further by offering password protection and even an “unlisted” privacy setting. This means that only people who have the specific link to your video can view it. So, if you’re looking for a way to share videos with select people without making them public, Vimeo is the way to go.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to make your videos available to anyone and everyone, then YouTube is the better option. After all, there’s really no point in posting a video on YouTube if you’re just going to make it unlisted!

Video Quality

When it comes to video quality, YouTube and Vimeo are actually quite similar. Both platforms allow you to upload videos in high definition (1080p) and even ultra-high definition (up to 4096p). That being said, a test done by Medium found that Vimeo tends to have better overall video quality than YouTube. So, if you want your audience to experience your content in all its glory, then you may want to post it on Vimeo.

However, YouTube has the edge when it comes to virtual reality videos. While both platforms allow for 360 degree videos, Vimeo doesn’t currently support true VR. Therefore, if you create a lot of VR videos or are planning to in the near future, YouTube is certainly the better fit.
