5 Tips to Avoid Zoom Burnout

With so many people working remotely these days, Zoom has become one of the most popular pieces of software on the market. In fact, this video conferencing tool registers an astounding 3.3 trillion annual meeting minutes these days. That’s a lot of meetings (and hopefully not too many boring ones)!

While it is great for staying connected with coworkers and clients, it can be a bit of a drain if you’re not careful. If you feel like Zoom has been zapping your energy lately, check out the following 5 tips to help avoid Zoom burnout.

Tip #1: Stop Multitasking

While it may seem like you’re being productive by attending a meeting and getting work done at the same time, multitasking can actually be quite detrimental to your productivity. When you try to focus on two things at once, your brain has to rapidly switch between tasks, which can lead to mental fatigue.

So, if you want to save yourself from Zoom fatigue, focus on one thing at a time during meetings. Turn off your email notifications, close any tabs that are open but not relevant to the meeting, and give the person on the other end of the screen your full attention. Your brain will thank you for it!

Tip #2: Turn Off Your Camera

When you have your camera on, you’re constantly aware of your own appearance and body language. This can lead to self-consciousness and anxiety, which can quickly zap your energy. It’s hard to be “on” all the time!

So, if you don’t need to be on screen at the time, simply turn off your camera, or at the very least the “self-view” option. You can still participate in the discussion and won’t have to worry about how you look, which can help you avoid Zoom burnout.

Tip #3: Stick to an Agenda

When you’re headed into a meeting, one of the best ways to avoid Zoom fatigue is to plan and stick to an agenda. This will help ensure that the meeting stays on track and doesn’t drag on longer than necessary.

Your fellow attendees will likely appreciate your scheduling efforts too, as it will help keep the meeting concise and to the point. There’s nothing worse than a meeting that constantly goes off topic and never seems to end!

Tip #4: Take Breaks

If you’ve been staring at a screen for hours on end, it’s important to take breaks, both mental and physical. Get up and move around every so often, or step away from your computer entirely for a few minutes. Taking a break will help refresh your mind and body, which can help reduce Zoom fatigue.

Tip #5: Work on Your Writing Skills

Have you ever heard the phrase “This meeting could’ve been an email”?  Well, it’s often true! Some meetings are simply the result of an unclear email or report, so you may be able to cut down on your Zoom meeting time entirely by working on your writing skills. This way, you’ll be able to communicate effectively without having to hop on a call every time. Not only will this save you time, but it will also save you from Zoom burnout.
